The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is available January 1st through March 31st of every year.  Medicare Advantage is Part C, one of the 4 Medicare Parts.  This enrollment period is specifically for individuals enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C).  Medicare Advantage plan members may use this enrollment period to make one of the following changes…

  • Change Medicare Advantage plans
  • Go back to Original Medicare Part A and B
  • Go back to Original Medicare and enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan and/or prescription drug plan.*

If you and your agent find a plan that better suits your needs, you can make a change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another during the Medicare Advantage Open enrollment period. Your new plan will start the 1st of the following month.  For example, if you sign up for a new Medicare Advantage plan January 15th, your new plan will have a February 1st effective date.  Your old MA plan should be automatically canceled, but you still want to call the insurer to verify the cancellation.

Medicare Advantage enrollees also have the option to dis-enroll from their MA plan and go back to Original Medicare during the MA open enrollment.   This can be risky to do without proper coverage from a Medicare Supplement plan.  If you are not in your 6-month Medicare Supplement enrollment period, you will NOT be qualify for guaranteed issue(unless you qualify for a special enrollment period).  The insurance company will require you to answer medical questions to qualify for coverage.  This is a form of medical underwriting.
